A complete care guide for miniature highland cattle from James R. Atah โ 25 years of hands-on experience raising and breeding mini highlands on a working family farm.
Mini highland cows thrive on quality grass hay and pasture grazing. Supplement with a loose mineral mix formulated for beef cattle. Fresh clean water must always be available. Adult mini highlands consume 2โ4% of their body weight in dry matter daily.
Mini highland cows need basic shelter from wind and rain โ a three-sided run-in shed is sufficient in most climates. Their thick double coats provide excellent insulation. Highland cattle are cold-hardy but appreciate shade in hot summers.
A single mini highland cow needs a minimum of half an acre. One acre per animal is ideal for year-round grazing. A small herd of three to four animals thrives on two to three acres with rotational grazing.
Annual vaccinations (7-way or 8-way clostridial), annual deworming, and regular hoof trimming every 6โ12 months are the core of a mini highland health program. Establish a relationship with a local large animal vet before your animal arrives.
Mini highland cows require regular brushing to prevent their long coats from matting. Use a wide-tooth comb or cattle brush. Regular gentle handling reinforces trust and makes veterinary care easier.
Highland cattle are herd animals and do best with at least one companion โ another mini highland, a goat, or even a donkey. A lone cow will be stressed and vocal. Plan for a companion animal from day one.
